Microneedling

Microneedling is a rejuvenating aesthetic medical procedure that stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin.

As we age, collagen and elastin production in the skin decreases; leaving the skin thin, wrinkled and sagging.  New collagen produced after micro needling leaves the skin smoother and tighter.

The procedure

The skin is numbed.  The procedure involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny needles.

This microtrauma stimulates collagen-producing cells in the deeper layers of the skin to activate.

How it works

Microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin which also allow skin care products (e.g.: serums and creams) applied to the skin to be absorbed into the deep layers of the skin much more effectively than simply applying your products to skin in the absence of needling.

Since the outer layer of the skin is only punctured and not removed, the microtrauma heals rapidly.

Conditions treated

There is a range of serums that we use during microneedling.  These are used to treat:

  • pigmentation/dark spots on the skin

  • wrinkles

  • acne scarring or uneven texture

  • cellulite

  • stretch marks

  • hair loss

How many treatments

are needed?

The severity of the skin condition being treated determines the number of treatments as well as the depth and frequency of needle penetration.  The needles penetrate the skin from 0.5mm to 2mm.  Usually 4 or more treatments are performed a month apart.  The improvement is compounded after each treatment.

Is Microneedling

painful?

A numbing cream is applied to the skin for 30 minutes before the procedure.  This provides adequate relief from any possible pain.  You may feel tiny pokes but this is quite tolerable.

How long is each treatment

20 minutes are reserved for the numbing cream.  The actual needling takes about another 20 minutes.

After care

Following the procedure, we recommend not using foundation or make up on the skin for 2 days.  You may continue your normal skin care routine as your products will be absorbed better after your treatment.  We also offer advice on which skin care products will be best for your skin.

Side effects

During the needling procedure, your skin will become red.  This is due to increased blood flow to the area.  We also aim to cause tiny blood spots just below the skin surface.  These are desired effects rather than adverse effects but will affect you daily routine as you may not want to be seen with red spots all over your face!  The blood spots tell us that we have punctured the dermis which is where collagen is made.  The redness and blood spots should resolve within a day or 2.
