Is it painful

Filler injections can be painful.  We use a numbing cream for 30 minutes prior to your procedure to reduce pain sensation. Most fillers now have lignocaine added them.  This provides anaesthetic during injection.

We also use a vibration device to prevent pain.  The Gate theory states that we cannot perceive vibration and pain concurrently due to the distribution of our nerve fibres.  A vibration device uses this principle to make your experience more pleasant.

For lip fillers, we offer an optional dental block.  This involves injections into the gums similar to ones given by your dentist.

Side effects

Some of the side effects you can expect during or after your filler injections are:

  • Pain

These usually settle within a few days.

Complications of fillers include:

  • Allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid or lignocaine

  • Lumps felt under the skin at the site of injections

  • Asymmetrical result

  • Emboli - should any filler enter the blood stream, it may cause an obstruction to blood flow

What are dermal fillers

A dermal filler is a hyaluronic acid based gel which is injected into the skin.  Hyaluronic acid also occurs naturally in the body and tends to absorb water in the skin, thereby adding volume or giving a plumping effect.

The fillers used are non-permanent and are absorbed into the skin over a period of time.  Individual response is varied and can last from 6 - 12 months.  It is not the same as botox.  Read more about the difference between botox and fillers here.

Dermal Fillers

What are fillers used for

Dermal fillers can be used for the treatment of deep wrinkles such as the creases between the nose and mouth.

Certain fillers can be used for deep injection in the cheek area to correct age-related volume loss in adults over 21

Results can last up to 15 months.

Fillers can be injected into the lips to plump them and give a fuller look.

It can be used to accentuate the lip border and enhance the "cupids bow" (the "M" part of your mid-upper lip).

Fillers give a smooth, soft consistency that mimics the natural feel of your lips.

Smokers lines around the mouth can also be treated.

Your doctor will discuss which filler will best suit your needs.

I had Juvederm lip filler at Dr Raboobee's practice about a year ago.  It was my very first time doing anything like that so I went in very anxious and was actually quite a pain to inject at the beginning because every time Dr Raboobee wanted to commence injecting the filler I would wince and pull away!

However, Dr Raboobee was so patient and gentle with me, she made sure she talked me through everything and calmed me down a lot.  Although this took up her time, she didn't mind at all.  To my relief, when she started in wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and throughout the procedure she kept asking if I was fine and if her injecting pace was fine.  She did an excellent job once completed and she even let me look whilst she was injecting my lips to make sure I was happy - as Im a total control freak!

I would highly recommend Dr Raboobee as she was not only professional but super patient, gentle and did an outstanding job!
