Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) procedures have recently become popular due to their various aesthetic uses as well as impressive results.

What is PRP?

PRP is a portion of a patient's own blood which has a platelet concentration that is much higher than the body's normal platelet concentration.

PRP is also rich in a variety of growth factors, which increase the proliferation of cells and recruitment of cells to specific sites for regeneration of cells.

Uses of PRP

  • Scars including acne scars, caesarian scars, etc

  • Stretch marks

  • Wrinkles / fine lines

  • Hair loss

  • Under eye hollows

  • Tightens ageing skin

The procedure

First some blood will be collected from you. We obtain the PRP from your own blood.  Only blood drawn from an individual can be used on that individual.

A machine called a centrifuge is used to spin the blood tubes in order to separate the different components of the blood.

PRP will then be extracted and prepared before injection / application.

Any area of skin can be treated; the most common being the face and scalp.

The area to be treated is numbed with a numbing cream.

The PRP is either injected or microneedled into the skin.

Read more about microneedling here.

How PRP is produced:

PRP

STEP 1:

Blood is drawn from the arm

STEP 2:

The blood is spun in a centrifuge

STEP 3:

The different components of the blood then seperate

STEP 4:

The watery component of the blood is drawn out and an activator is added.

STEP 5:

The PRP is applied to the skin during and/or after microneedling

Platelet Rich Plasma stimulates new collagen and elastin to form in the skin allowing for tightening and rejuvenation

Is PRP painful?

A numbing cream is applied to the skin for 30 minutes before the procedure.  This provides adequate relief from any possible pain.

A vibration device can be used to reduce pain sensation as well.

Number of treatments

For facial rejuvenation, even a single treatment is effective.  Regular treatments are of greater benefit.

For hair loss 4 or more treatments are done 1 month apart depending on severity.

For scalp / eyebrow treatments for hair loss, a booster session may be required after 6 months depending on individual response.

After care

Following the procedure, we recommend not using foundation or make up on the skin for 2 days.

You may continue your normal skin care routine as your products will be absorbed better after your treatment.

We can advise you on which skin care products will be best for your skin.

As this is a natural product drawn directly from the patient, side effects are minimal.

You can expect redness to follow needling or injections.  This is due to increased blood flow to the area.  We also aim to cause tiny blood spots just below the skin surface.  These are desired effects rather than adverse effects.

This usually settles in 1 - 2 days.  Bruising is possible.

A sterile technique is used, which reduces the risk of introducing infection into the skin.

Side effects

Please note: An Innopen microneedling device is used at our practice. It is used differently to the microneedling device in these videos. Both devices have needles which pierce the skin and allow the PRP to enter the skin.

PRP can be microneedled or injected into the scalp to promote hair growth.

Platelets recruit growth factors and stem cells to hair cells, which stimulate hair cells to multiply.  Blood flow to the area is also increased, providing much needed oxygen for growing hair cells.

Hairs increase in number and thickness.

Hair fall is reduced and hair density is increased.

4 or more sessions are required a month apart.  Hair continues to grow after this period and can take up to a year for visible change.
